Festive FactsThe festive period brings a number of challenges for the motor industry-from Christmas gift deliveries to the countless journeys made up and down the country on Christmas Eve by people travelling to see family and friends.

Here at Neva, we know the importance of vehicles for keeping things moving during the festive period, so we’ve selected some of the most interesting automotive facts and turned them in to an informative infographic.

A whopping 31 million car journeys are expected to be made during the festive period in the nine days preceding Christmas; that’s a lot of miles covered on the UK’s motorways! It isn’t just family road trips expected to cover plenty of mileage during December, as van drivers covered a massive 46.9 billion miles in 2015, making it their busiest month. For one particular driver, it was also an extra late finish, as the last Amazon Prime order was delivered just in the nick of time at 11.59pm last Christmas eve.

It isn’t just Christmas that makes December a busy month; harsher winter weather conditions saw councils order in 1.3 million tonnes of salt ready for the gritting season in 2015, if it’s a white Christmas this year as is predicted, that’s a lot of salt!

While the festive season brings joy and relaxation for many people, there are also perils to watch out for. Green Flag revealed in 2015 there were no fewer than 510,000 breakdowns reported. December 2015 also worryingly saw a rather alarming 7,123 drivers caught over the drink drive limit in England and Wales alone.

On a more positive note, come December 24th the attention of the Neva team turns to everyone’s festive favourite, good old Santa! We were shocked to learn he’d need to be working an incredible amount of overtime on Christmas Eve to deliver everyone’s presents, statisticians calculated that he’d need to travel a staggering 650 miles per second to successfully deliver presents to everyone in the world the night before Christmas - a very busy man indeed!

There’s certainly no let-up in demand for extravagant gifts this year, as a motors.co.uk survey found 28.3% of people are hoping Santa will be very generous this year and they’ll find a German Car in their (extra-large) stocking!
